# Platform Gravity: Know where your exposure sits

Platform Gravity is continuous, powerful, and mostly invisible. 

Every tech company building on, selling through, or competing alongside a major platform is subject to it. Ignore it, and your market window can close fast - often before you realize it's happening.

Here are the 4 platform modes you need to know, and where your exposure actually sits:

1\. Sell-To (Platform as Customer): Most Transactional  
You sell directly to the platform as an internal buyer.  
*The Risk: Unless your tool is tied directly to their strategic product roadmap, you are treated like any other vendor, making your contract an easy target for cost-cutting when spending slows down.*

2\. Sell-Through (Platform as Channel): Most Misunderstood  
You use their marketplace or partner program as a route to market.  
*The Risk: Getting listed in a marketplace isn't the same as having a real sales channel. If you don't have active alignment with their sales reps in the field, it will be hard to hit revenue projections.*

3\. Build-On (Platform as Foundation): Biggest Risk  
Your product is built on top of their infrastructure or core models.  
*The Risk: If your product doesn't give customers a strong reason to stay, the platform can easily build your main features directly into their core product. We saw this when Salesforce added free AI email drafting and summarization straight into Agentforce. Overnight, standalone ISVs lost their advantage.*

4\. Build-Into (Platform as Destination): Most Durable  
You build a feature that fills a specific gap in the platform's long-term plan - one they prefer the ecosystem to solve rather than building it themselves. This is what OpenAI is doing with its Apps SDK, encouraging outside developers to build directly inside ChatGPT.  
*The Risk: Your success depends entirely on reading their product direction correctly. If their internal plans shift and you don't adapt, you lose your protection overnight.*

Most teams can tell you which platform they sell to or build on top of. Fewer can tell you whether they've built something that platform actually depends on. That's the real question, and it's worth answering before the next roadmap update answers it for you.
